Set 'Em Up for Symmetry: A New Era in Treating Torticollis and Plagiocephaly

  Contact Hours : 8 Hours

Course Description

This course focuses on a functional evidence-based approach to the  examination, evaluation and treatment for patients with congenital muscular  torticollis (CMT) with or without plagiocephaly. Through a systematic review of  normal cervical anatomy, biomechanics, and developmental milestones, the  learner will value the examination of the effects of asymmetries on alterations  in body structure and function that contribute to limitations in activity.  Further, an appraisal of red flags, appreciation of diagnostic imaging, review  of age appropriate and validated standardized tests, current clinical practice  guidelines and supplemental interventions provides the learner with a  clinically oriented framework for the contemporary management of these  patients. An eclectic set of videos, pictures, demonstrations, and case studies  with discussion to enhance learning, critical thinking and the application of  content that can be immediately used in clinical practice.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the  learner will:

  • Identify ways to prevent  congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) and how to detect CMT early.
  • Identify potential red flags  through differential diagnosis and systems screening.
  • Understand the anatomy, kinesiology  and biomechanics of the musculature involved in CMT.
  • Identify asymmetries through  examination of passive and active movement of the neck, trunk, pelvis, and  hips.
  • Identify cranial and facial  asymmetries as well as identify need for referral to appropriate specialists.
  • Understand the effects of  asymmetrical postures and movement on development and various body systems.
  • Develop therapeutic interventions  to promote symmetrical movement and facilitate age appropriate developmental skills.
